Searching for materials to cut steel?
We would like to explain which materials are suitable to cut steel. Steel is relatively hard, because of this, not all materials are suitable to cut steel. Furthermore it can be unknown how hard the exact the steel is, that needs to be cut.
The safest option is a material which is abrasion resistance and tough. In this case we often advice our customers a basic choice, this is the material wst. 1.2767 or his exclusive ‘little brother’ the wst. 1.2746.

What kind of material are these?
These types are also called “nickel steel”, because of the high nickel percentage (4%) that these types contain. Both types can be hardened to a hardness around 54-56HRc. Depending on the application, for which the material is used, is a lower hardness possible.
What is the difference between these materials?
The wst. 1.2746 is called exclusive because it is generally considered as a better quality, especially if different kind of materials needs to be cut.
Another important difference is that the wst. 1.2767 is available from stock. It is produced by the steel plant in plates in different thicknesses. We buy this already sawed in the right size, for your products. In contradiction to his ‘brother’, the wst. 1.2746 is not produced in stock. This must be rolled or forged, depending on the bar size, and be purchased on order.
Long delivery times
There are only a few steel plants that make these materials. This in combuination with the production method, makes that the delivery time can lead up to 6 (six) months. To avoid these delivery times Willpro holds a large stock of these materials in different sizes. As a result we have basic material available for our customers and we can start manufacturing immediately.
These two materials are not the only materials which are suited to cut steel. But generally they are the first and safest option. There are different materials that can be, depending on the application, more suitable. To, for example, improve the resistance time. But we will come back on that later.
